Taiwan and China have finally signed ECFA (Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement) today
There has been much debate over the effectiveness of ECFA. Taiwan's opposition party DPP believe that ECFA is nothing but just a nice-looking cover
ECFA is not an FTA (Free Trade Agreement). There are also concerns that more China workers will flock to Taiwan and compete directly with the locals for jobs like what is hapenning in Singapore currently
It is claimed that ECFA will be more advantageous to Taiwan than China. The former can reap up to more than US$13 billion while China's benefits are about US$2.8 billion
In my perspective, ECFA would be a long-term disadvantage to the Taiwanese. They have to rely on the mainland anyway and it is China who gets to control the game in the end
The game has just begun
