One billion. That is the amount of money one needs to fork out if he wants to telecast the 2010 World Cup in tiny little Singapore. Singtel and Starhub joined forces but failed the mission. Mediacorp surprising joined the chase. The Football Association of Singapore stepped in to help by negotiating with Fifa. Government intervention is also on the cards
Before a single match is even broadcasted, football fans could already taste a bit of action from this telecast rights saga. Currently, Singapore can only count on FAS to resolve the matter. The reasons given would be that a small nation which is hosting this year's Youth Olympics should receive a better deal
I think the main reason why Fifa priced such an expensive amount for the broadcast rights is because it noticed the EPL telecast war between both telecom giants months back. It saw that both companies were financially strong hence, thought that a higher price should suit Singapore
Fifa doesn't understand that watching the World Cup every four years is not just about the sake of watching, it's about passion and the joy of watching the beautiful game.
