Together

The last episode of the drama Together (当我们同在一起) was aired on Monday. After watching all 36 episodes of this show on Channel 8, I can safely say that it is a decent one. Not only did it brought back old memories to the older generation, it also taught the younger generation moral values and lessons about life through the main characters. It can even become a topic for Chinese literature in schools

For example, the cowardliness of Yao Wuji (Zhang Zhen Huan) and naiveness of Tarzan (Elvin Ng) are just a couple of things which we can see and learn from. Not asking you to be a coward of course

Wuji is an introvert who has no ambition. Because of his timidness, he is frequently teased by people whether in front of or behind him. There was one scene where he was given a cake from Jinhao (Eelyn Kok) but didn't manage to eat it because Jinhao's mother stopped him as he did not pay

He was too afraid to do anything and hence walked away sadly. Back at his book store, he realized that if one is brave, there is nothing to fear of. He plucked up his courage and returned to the coffee shop and asked Jinhao for another piece of cake. The latter felt awkward but gave him another piece

Her mother, again, spotted Wuji eating the cake and reiterated by scolding him for the second time. He shouted at her back in return that he wanted to eat it and it was given by Jinhao. Shocked at his unusual "burst" of reaction, she was speechless. Jinhao smiled at him

It is all just a little courage that one needs when doing something that seems tedious or impossible. There is nothing to be scared of in this world, the braver you are, the more the number of people who will admire you

Lin Xiaobei (Dai Yangtian) is a complete opposite of Wuji. A daredevil who is eloquent and has big ambitions, he was the centre of attention of the other three females. The smartest among the six main characters, he is always the leader and problem-solver

Xiaobei's best buddy, Tarzan, was also a brave soul like him. However, he is naive thus often easily influenced by others. He gives up easily when doing things

This shows us that one must be determined in order to succeed. Like the saying goes, pain is temporary, glory is forever. Tarzan is a good example of what one will become if one easily gives in to setbacks. After 30 years old, he hasn't accomplished anything meaningful in his life

Yao Jianhong (Jeanette Aw) acts as the unimportant yet indispensable role in this story. The most realistic and calm, she was been the fire hose which put out numerous flames throughout the drama. A forgiving and understanding person, she was well-liked except that her dance hostess background tainted her image

She is entangled in a love triangle with Tarzan and Xiaobei but only has her eyes on the latter. She married to Tarzan for ten years in the later part of the story but Tarzan never managed to win her heart

Xiaobei still ended up with Jianhong at the end of the story presenting the fact that some things just cannot be changed in life no matter how hard one tries to. Just like what I always say, with attachment comes commitment, without attachment, one does not feel the need to be committed

Qin Huimin (Kola Zhou) was a scholar and the cleverest in terms of academics compared to her five friends. Huimin comprehended the fact that some things cannot be changed in life, hence, despite falling in love with Xiaobei, she attempted to bring him and Jianhong together

By doing so, she became a happier person blessed with more good fortune. She started her own law firm after university and lived a comfortable life. Although, she still clung on to a glimmer of hope when she found Xiaobei after ten years, she realized that it was useless and let him go in the end

In contrast, Jinhao, who also liked Xiaobei never failed in letting everyone know her love for him. She tried deceiving herself and everyone that Xiaobei was hers. Naive like her brother Tarzan, she was frequently cheated and had to have someone to save her at the eleventh hour

She got into trouble and suffered a ill fate in the later part of the story. Also, her vanity caused her a lot of problems and misunderstandings. She was very particular about her looks. One's physical appearance is not everything. Huimin is a very good example

Actually, if the scriptwriter could emphasize more on the part of how Huimin managed to do well in her studies-like what study methods she used, the show would have been even better

Hope to see more shows like Together from Mediacorp
